However, hardly any time is spent on<\/span><span id=\"E1671\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> making students apply individual concepts to small cases. This is where the problem starts to develop. While attempting small cases and seeking constructive feedback from the faculty, students will improve their ability to apply the concept to real-life situations, build &amp; structure thoughts commensurate to the needs of the exam, learn to manage time. Critical feedback from the faculties is super important for students to know their areas of improvement and then work on them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E1672\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E1673\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Practice past papers<\/span><span id=\"E1674\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E1675\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2013 With my experience of teaching the subject for more than a decade, I have observed the following two basic flaws while preparing for the SBL exam<\/span><span id=\"E1676\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E1677\" class=\"qowt-li-7_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph x-scope qowt-word-para-1\" role=\"listitem\" aria-roledescription=\"Bullet\"><span id=\"E1678\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Faculties leave the element of practicing past papers for a little too late<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E1679\" class=\"qowt-li-7_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph x-scope qowt-word-para-1\" role=\"listitem\" aria-roledescription=\"Bullet\"><span id=\"E1680\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Students do not take seriously the fact that practising questions from past papers, solving an entire past paper in the stipulated time period are critical to acclimatizing the mind to a real exam scenario<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E1681\" class=\"qowt-li-7_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph x-scope qowt-word-para-1\" role=\"listitem\" aria-roledescription=\"Bullet\"><span id=\"E1682\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Another risky approach that students follow is that rather than self-attempting the past paper, they read the past paper question and answers feeling that they would also be able to do a similarly good job in the live exam<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E1683\" class=\"qowt-li-7_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph x-scope qowt-word-para-1\" role=\"listitem\" aria-roledescription=\"Bullet\"><span id=\"E1684\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Some students who are diligent in solving past papers also make a common mistake. They generally do not attempt a past paper <\/span><span id=\"E1685\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">within the allotted 3-hour time frame and understand what worked well and the challenges. This for me is the real make or break in the actual live exam. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"E1686\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E1687\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Please keep in mind the fact that majority of students attempting the SBL exams come from a background wherein the exam pattern was nowhere close to the SBL exam patter. Previous exams are mostly focussed on explaining the concept<\/span><span id=\"E1688\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, rote learning, drawing diagrams etc., none of which is relevant for the SBL <\/span>exam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<div id=\"contents\" class=\"style-scope qowt-page\">\n<p id=\"E1689\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-2\"><span id=\"E1690\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Revision<\/span><span id=\"E1691\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> Vs. Recall<\/span><span id=\"E1692\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> \u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E1693\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">We have all grown up to revise our syllabus multiple times before the exam. <\/span><span id=\"E1694\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">People around us tell us, sell this to us as a good recipe for academic success.<\/span><span id=\"E1695\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> However, this is absolutely not worth the effort we put in<\/span><span id=\"E1696\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">. Over a period of time while the courses, curriculums and examination patterns have evolved, our approach to prepare for them is more or less old school, static. <\/span><span id=\"E1697\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Revision needs to be replaced with<\/span><span id=\"E1698\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E1699\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u201cRecalling<\/span><span id=\"E1701\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u201d,<\/span><span id=\"E1703\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> wherein students test their memory about things they remember (random topics) from the curriculum. Whatever they remember, further solidifies in the form of retention (which is good for the real exam) and things that they do not remember is what they should immediately refer to from their notes, presentations etc. This has proven to be a real game changer for all students who have tried implementing the same consistently over a period of time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E1706\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-1\"><span id=\"E1707\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Pre-seen analysis <\/span><span id=\"E1709\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2013 <\/span><span id=\"E1710\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">The latest change in the SBL examination pattern is that students receive a pre-seen case study <\/span><span id=\"E1711\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">generally 10-15 days in advance of the actual SBL exam. For example, the pre-seen case study for the December 2023 attempt is expected to be released by ACCA by the 21<\/span><span id=\"E1712\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">st<\/span><span id=\"E1713\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> \/ 22<\/span><span id=\"E1714\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">nd<\/span><span id=\"E1715\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> November. According to me this is a very positive step taken by ACCA for the benefit of the students and also reinforce the need for more emphasis on an application mindset rather than a theoretical mindset. Students should thoroughly analyse the pre-seen and spend time to understand the following things \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"E1716\" class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph x-scope qowt-word-para-1\" role=\"listitem\" aria-roledescription=\"Bullet\"><strong><span id=\"E1717\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Black and white information<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"E1718\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> \u2013 this includes things, facts and figures explicitly mentioned in the <\/span><span id=\"E1719\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">pre-seen<\/span><\/li>\n<li id=\"E1720\" class=\"qowt-li-2_0 qowt-list qowt-stl-ListParagraph x-scope qowt-word-para-1\" role=\"listitem\" aria-roledescription=\"Bullet\"><strong><span id=\"E1721\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Interpreting the grey areas<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"E1722\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> \u2013 While there will be a lot of black and white information, things are also subject to interpretation and drawing inferences from them.
