From Struggling with English Language to Landing a Global Placement – Abhishek Antil’s Inspiring Story

Abhishek comes from a small town in Haryana. Growing up, he had very little exposure to English, which made studies challenging in the beginning. But his interest in numbers and finance pushed him to pursue B.Com (Hons) from Delhi University (School of Open Learning) and later the ACCA qualification.

Balancing academics with his passion for cricket, where he represented Haryana at the U-17 level and won multiple gold medals in national school tournaments, Abhishek built a strong sense of discipline and focus. When he started ACCA, the English language and new concepts felt tough, but step by step, he improved and cleared 10 papers with consistent effort.

With every paper he passed, his confidence grew. From struggling with the basics, he went on to successfully clear 10 ACCA papers. Along the way, he also worked on his communication and professional skills, which prepared him for bigger opportunities.

This mix of hard work, guidance from mentors, and persistence helped him land an international placement. For someone who once struggled with the English language, securing a global job is proof of his determination. Abhishek’s story shows that with focus and consistency, no background can hold you back from building a career on the global stage. His journey is an inspiration for every student who thinks their starting point can limit them—hard work and persistence can truly take you anywhere.

Let’s hear Abhishek’s journey in his own words…

Q. Congratulations, Abhishek, on clearing all 10 ACCA papers! How did you feel when you saw the results and realised how far you’ve come?

Thank you, it was honestly a mix of relief, happiness, and pride. Clearing 10 papers felt like a huge milestone—like all the long nights, sacrifices, and effort had finally been worth it. In the beginning, I used to worry if my background and my weak English would hold me back. So when I saw the results, it wasn’t just about passing exams, it was about proving to myself that I could overcome those hurdles. More than anything, it gave me the belief that I am much closer to becoming a complete finance professional, something I once thought was out of reach.

Q. Looking back, what made you choose ACCA in the first place?

I chose ACCA because it’s globally recognised and practical. I didn’t want a qualification that would limit me to one country. Coming from a small town in Haryana, I always dreamed of going beyond boundaries and ACCA seemed like the right path. The syllabus also felt very relevant, it connected concepts directly with real business problems, which made studying more interesting. Another factor was flexibility. I could pace my exams and balance them with my B.Com studies. At first, I was nervous about whether I could keep up with such an international course, but I realised ACCA gives you the time and space to grow step by step.

Q. In your journey so far, was there a point when you doubted yourself? If any, then how did you overcome that?

Yes, definitely. There were times when the syllabus felt overwhelming, especially when I had to handle multiple papers at once. After a tough mock exam, I sometimes felt like I wasn’t cut out for this. On top of that, struggling with English made things worse as I had to read some questions twice just to fully understand them. What helped me was breaking the syllabus into smaller, manageable goals. Instead of thinking, “How will I cover the entire paper?”, I focused on one topic at a time. Talking to peers who were facing the same challenges gave me a lot of motivation too. Slowly, I realised that consistency mattered more than perfection. Every small effort built up to something bigger.

Q. Support and guidance matter a lot. How did ACCA coaching or mentorship help you through 10 papers?

Coaching gave me the structure I really needed. Before joining classes, I used to waste a lot of time trying to figure out what was important and what wasn’t. My mentors changed that completely. I still remember how Shilpi Ma’am (our lead mentor) listened to my concerns—whether it was about English language challenges or tough concepts, she was always there to guide me. At The Wallstreet School, the classes were conducted in Hinglish, which made it much easier for me to understand the concepts and feel comfortable while learning. She also taught me exam techniques like how to manage time, how to connect answers to case studies, and even how to secure those professional marks that make a big difference. Having such a mentor kept me motivated and saved me from trial and error. For me, that guidance was one of the main reasons I could clear 10 papers.

Q. How did you feel when you got the placement offer?

It was one of the happiest moments of my life. Honestly, I felt excited and proud. For someone who once doubted if he could even manage the English language, getting placed in an international role was like a dream coming true. It wasn’t just about the job, but it was proof that all the hours spent studying and preparing had turned into a real opportunity. I remember calling my family first thing and seeing the pride on their faces. That feeling gave me even more confidence that I can take what I’ve learned in ACCA and actually apply it in the real world.

Q. Any final advice for students who are starting their ACCA journey?

My biggest advice is don’t think of ACCA as just passing exams. Look at it as building long-term skills for your career. Stay consistent, even if you feel your progress is slow. At the start, I was worried about my English language and thought I wouldn’t survive, but with daily practice and steady effort, I improved without even realising it. Remember, ACCA neither requires fancy English with a lot of jargon being used nor penalises for grammatical mistakes. So as long as you can address the requirement of the question, that’s enough! Focus more on understanding concepts instead of memorising, because when you truly understand, exams become much easier. And most importantly, don’t pressure yourself to be perfect every day. Some days will be harder than others, and that’s normal. The key is to keep moving forward step by step, because every small effort adds up to success in the long run.

Abhishek’s journey shows that where you come from doesn’t decide where you can go. Growing up in a small town in Haryana with little exposure to the English language, he faced many challenges, but step by step,  he cleared 10 ACCA papers and landed an international placement. His story proves that with the right support, focus, and consistency, any student can overcome hurdles and build a career on the global stage.
