ACCA is changing its structure under ACCA 2027, and if you are studying right now or planning to start soon, you need the actual details, not just "big changes coming" headlines. Here is what is really changing, when it kicks in, and what it means for you.

What This Change Actually Is

ACCA Syllabus 2027 is the biggest update to the ACCA Syllabus in years, announced in mid 2025 under the name Accountancy Redefined. The core change: exams go from 13 to 11, and the qualification moves from three levels to four. This touches the entire ACCA Course, from how you enter to how you finish.

One thing this is not: an easier version of ACCA. The technical accounting content stays just as demanding. What changes is the structure around it, and how much weight gets placed on real workplace skills alongside the exams.

Three Levels Become Four

ACCA New Syllabus splits the qualification into Foundations, Knowledge, Expertise, and Strategic Professional. Foundations is brand new, meant for students who are newer to finance and need a confidence building stage before the technical papers start. This should help students who previously found the early jump into Applied Knowledge too steep.

Knowledge keeps the same 3 papers as the current Applied Knowledge level, though Business and Technology is being retired in its current form. Expertise replaces Applied Skills, dropping from 6 papers to 5. This is where ACCA Subjects 2027 shift the most, mixing core accounting with data and risk skills aimed at mid to senior finance roles.

Strategic Professional also gets smaller, moving from 2 core plus 2 option papers down to 2 core papers and 1 option paper. A new option, Data Science Professional, joins the list, which tells you a lot about where finance work is heading.

What Changes Inside the Exams

The ACCA Exam Pattern change goes beyond just fewer papers. The current single ethics module gets replaced by three separate Essential Employability Modules, assessed across different stages instead of completed once at the end. These are compulsory and built around actual workplace skills, not just theory.

ACCA Exam Changes also bring AI, data analytics, and sustainability directly into core papers instead of treating them as separate specialist add ons. This matches what finance teams are already dealing with day to day.

There is a new academic angle too. Finish Knowledge plus the employability module, and you get a Higher Diploma in Accounting and Business. Finish Expertise, and you get an Advanced Diploma. Students can also pursue a BSc through the University of London alongside ACCA, something that did not exist before.

The Dates That Actually Matter

Current syllabus exams run through June 2027, the last sitting under the existing structure. New Knowledge level exams start from July 2027. New Expertise and Strategic Professional exams start from September 2027. Mark these three dates specifically, since most of the confusion students run into comes from mixing up which level switches over when.

If you are studying now, nothing changes for you immediately. Every one of the ACCA Papers you clear under the current syllabus carries forward. ACCA has a Transition Tool built specifically to map your completed exams onto the new structure, so nobody loses progress or restarts from zero.

What to Actually Do With This Information

Students starting in 2026 will likely end up on a hybrid path, some papers under the old structure, some under the new one. Students starting in 2027 follow the new structure entirely. Entry requirements and exemptions stay the same through all of this, so your ACCA Qualification eligibility is not affected.

If you are already mid way through your papers, check the Transition Tool, finish any papers you are close to completing before June 2027 if it actually helps you, and do not rush decisions out of panic. Big syllabus changes like this happen periodically, and they usually end up less disruptive than they first sound.

If you want a clear answer on how your own timeline lines up with this, The WallStreet School has already mapped its 2026 and 2027 batches against ACCA's Transition Tool, so you get a straight answer instead of guessing.

Bottom Line

This redesign is real and it matters, but it changes how the qualification is delivered, not what accountants actually need to know. Fewer exams, a new entry level, employability skills built into assessment, and more technology and sustainability content, that is the whole picture. Already studying? Your progress carries over, nothing changes today. About to start? Just figure out which side of June 2027 you land on before locking in a schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my passed ACCA papers still count after 2027?

Yes. Every paper passed under the current syllabus carries forward through ACCA's Transition Tool. Nothing gets lost, and you do not need to resubmit anything manually, the mapping happens on ACCA's end once you register under the new structure.

When does the new syllabus actually start?

Knowledge level exams start under the new structure from July 2027. Expertise and Strategic Professional start from September 2027. June 2027 is the last sitting where you can attempt papers under the current syllabus.

Is the new syllabus easier?

No. Technical depth stays the same. What changes is exam count, structure, and how employability skills get assessed, through three separate modules instead of one combined ethics unit.

Should students starting in 2026 be worried?

Not really. Most will follow a hybrid path, and anything already passed carries forward regardless of which structure they started under. The main thing to track is your own exam sequence against the June 2027 cutoff.

Are entry requirements changing too?

No. Entry requirements and exemption rules stay the same through this transition, based on ACCA's current published guidance. This applies to age requirements, academic eligibility, and exemption eligibility alike.

What happens if I fail to finish a level before June 2027?

Nothing drastic. Any papers you have already passed still transfer through the Transition Tool. You simply continue the remaining papers under whichever structure applies at the time you sit them.

Do I need to complete the new Essential Employability Modules if I started under the old syllabus?

This depends on where your Transition Tool mapping places you. Students who move into the new structure partway through typically complete the employability modules attached to whichever new level they land in, even if they started under the old three level system.
