Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before enrolling.
1. What Is the CFA Program?
CFA stands for Chartered Financial Analyst — a globally recognised charter awarded by the CFA Institute, the US-based non-profit that essentially writes the rulebook for the investment management profession. It isn’t a college degree. Think of it as a self-paced, exam-driven certification you complete by clearing three levels of exams and putting in the required work experience. Clear all three, meet the experience bar, and you earn the charter and can officially call yourself a charterholder. The curriculum comes from the CFA Institute itself, which also runs the exams — and it gets revised every year to keep pace with how markets actually work.
What do you actually learn along the way? Reading financial statements properly, valuing companies and securities, managing portfolios, working with fixed income and derivatives, and applying ethical standards when making financial calls. None of it is purely theoretical — it’s built to mirror what analysts and portfolio managers really do once they’re on the job.
One distinction worth keeping straight: the CFA Program is the actual certification path, owned entirely by the CFA Institute. CFA coaching is a different thing — the classes, mentorship and study support an institute offers to help you prepare for those exams. Coaching doesn’t replace the Program in any way; it just makes the journey through the curriculum a lot less confusing.
2. The Three CFA Levels
Each level builds on the last, and each one tests you in a genuinely different way — Level 1 leans on recall, Level 2 on applied analysis, Level 3 on judgement.
| Level | Main Focus | Question Style |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Basic concepts across all ten topics | Multiple choice questions |
| Level 2 | Applied financial analysis and valuation | Case-based item sets (vignettes) |
| Level 3 | Portfolio management and wealth management | Item sets and constructed response |
Most candidates take around four years to clear all three levels, though this stretches shorter or longer depending on the person. The CFA Institute suggests a minimum of 300 study hours per level — plenty of candidates need more, depending on their finance background.
3. The Ten Core Subjects
The same ten subjects show up at every level — how much weight each carries, and how deep you go, changes as you move from Level 1 toward Level 3.
| Subject | What You Learn |
|---|---|
| Ethics | Professional standards, codes of conduct and ethical decision-making — carries real weight in the final score |
| Quantitative Methods | Statistics, probability and time value of money — the mathematical groundwork for everything after |
| Economics | Micro and macro principles that move markets, interest rates and currencies |
| Financial Statement Analysis | Reading balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements correctly |
| Corporate Issuers | Corporate governance, capital structure and capital budgeting |
| Equity Investments | Stock valuation methods, market structures and equity analysis |
| Fixed Income | Bond pricing, yield curves, credit risk |
| Derivatives | Options, futures, forwards, swaps and how they're priced and used to manage risk |
| Alternative Investments | Real estate, private equity, hedge funds, commodities |
| Portfolio Management | Asset allocation, risk management and building portfolios around a client's goals |
4. CFA Eligibility
Compared to a lot of other finance certifications, CFA eligibility is refreshingly flexible. To register, you generally need one of these:
- A bachelor’s degree, or
- To be in the final year of your bachelor’s degree, or
- Four years combined of professional work experience and education
B.Com, BBA and BAF students are eligible across the board, and it’s one of the most common backgrounds among CFA candidates. Engineers, MBA finance graduates and working professionals in banking or financial services take it up regularly too — the fixed exam windows and self-paced prep make it workable alongside a full-time job. Final-year students can register for Level 1, but need their degree in hand before moving further.
5. Exam Pattern and How to Prepare
| Level | Question Format | Testing Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Multiple choice questions | Knowledge and basic application |
| Level 2 | Item sets based on vignettes | Applied financial analysis |
| Level 3 | Item sets and constructed response | Portfolio management application |
There’s no single magic formula for prep, but a structured approach helps:
- Understand the curriculum. Check the topic weightage for your level before you start, so you know where to spend more time.
- Create a study plan. Break the syllabus into weekly targets based on how much time you actually have.
- Learn concepts. Focus on the logic behind formulas and frameworks, not just memorising them.
- Practise questions. Solve topic-wise questions right after finishing each section.
- Identify weak areas. Track which topics keep tripping you up and give those extra attention.
- Revise continuously. Circle back to older topics along the way instead of dumping revision at the end.
- Take mock tests. Sit full mocks under real exam conditions to build time management.
- Analyse mistakes. Dig into why an answer was wrong, not just what the right one was.
- Final revision. In the last few weeks, stick to summary notes and formula sheets.
6. Skills You Build and Careers It Opens Up
A CFA course builds a fairly wide set of practical skills that translate directly into investment and analysis roles: financial analysis, investment analysis, equity research, financial statement analysis, valuation, portfolio management, fixed income, risk analysis, quantitative analysis, investment decision-making and professional ethics.
That range shows up across the roles it opens: Financial Analyst, Investment Analyst, Equity Research Analyst, Portfolio Analyst, Portfolio Manager, Risk Analyst, and positions across investment banking, wealth management, corporate finance, asset management and research. What you actually land depends on prior experience, which level you’ve cleared, and whatever extra skills you bring beyond the certification — the CFA salary in India swings a fair bit for exactly that reason, so treat the charter as a foundation, not a fixed number.
7. Is CFA Worth It, and Who Should Pursue It?
It tends to pay off genuinely for careers in investment management, equity research, portfolio management, investment analysis, wealth management and related roles built around analysing markets and securities — the curriculum lines up closely with the actual work involved. It’s not the right fit for everyone though: if you’re aiming for pure accounting, taxation or general corporate roles unrelated to markets, other certifications may serve you better, and CFA does ask for a serious multi-year time commitment.
The course fits a fairly wide range of people, including commerce and finance students, economics students, MBA finance specialisations, working professionals in banking who want more analytical roles, investment professionals wanting formal recognition, and anyone eyeing equity research or portfolio management specifically.
8. CFA Coaching vs Self-Study
| Factor | CFA Coaching | Self-Study |
|---|---|---|
| Study Structure | Handed to you by the institute | You build your own plan from scratch |
| Faculty Support | Access to experienced faculty | No direct faculty access |
| Doubt Resolution | Resolved through classes or dedicated sessions | Relying on forums or your own research |
| Mock Tests | Usually bundled into the program | You need to source these separately |
| Accountability | Regular classes create built-in accountability | Comes down entirely to self-discipline |
| Cost | Extra cost on top of CFA Institute fees | No extra cost beyond official material |
9. Fees, Duration and Choosing the Right Institute
CFA course fees aren’t a single payment — you’re paying the CFA Institute directly for enrollment and each level’s exam registration, and separately for whatever coaching, study material and mock tests you choose to go with. CFA Institute fees change from time to time, so it’s worth checking their official website for the current numbers; coaching fees vary by institute and mode of learning — see the current fee tiers further down this page.
Before choosing a CFA classes institute, it’s worth comparing: real industry faculty experience, full syllabus coverage for your level, live classes for real-time doubts, recorded lectures to revisit, enough topic-wise practice questions, full-length mock exams, how doubts actually get resolved, a structured study planner, revision support closer to the exam, and whether there’s any career support once you’re through.
It’s the same discipline worth applying if you’re weighing CFA against FRM, ACCA or a financial modeling course — the CFA & FRM eligibility checker is a quick way to see where you stand before committing to either path.
The Only Question Left
Every candidate’s CFA journey looks a little different, shaped by their background, the level they’re working through, and the support they lean on along the way. The syllabus, the levels and the charter will still be here next year, revised and unchanged in what they demand. The only real question is how much of that four-year runway you want to spend figuring things out alone versus with a structured plan and someone to catch the mistakes you can’t see yet.
